Dec 31st) Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph, [B] Family as a Confessional

 Kej. 15:1-6;21:1-3; Mzm. 105:1b-2,3-4,5-6,8-9; Ibr. 11:8,11-12,17-19; Luk. 2:22-40

Introduction: On the last Sunday of the year, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family.  We are here to offer all the members of our own families on the altar for God’s blessing.

Scripture lessons summarized: The first reading (Gen 15:1-6, 21: 1-3) Today we hear God’s promise (Chapter 15),  of numerous descendants  to Abraham whom Judaism, Christianity, Islam consider their father, and its fulfillment (Chapter 21) when Abraham’s wife, Sarah, gave birth to Isaac.

In the second reading, (Hebrews 11:8, 11-12, 17-19)taken from the letter to the Hebrews, the sacred author further shows us the trusting faith of Abraham in the promises of God, first,  in Abraham’s willingness to move his whole family to an unknown place to which God said He would lead him; second, in the way Abraham and Sarah trusted God’s power to give  them  a son born to them in their very old age and third, in the way Abraham’s unwavering Faith in his God enabled him to obey, without hesitation, his God’s order to sacrifice his only son.

Today’s Gospel (Lk 2:22-40) presents the head of the Holy Family, Joseph, faithfully obeying God’s law given through Moses concerning the purification of the mother and the redeeming of the child by presenting Mary and the Baby Jesus in the Temple. The events recounted here are also found on February 2nd, the Feast of Presentation of Jesus.

 Life messages: 1) We need to learn lessons from the Holy Family: The Church encourages us to look to the Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph for inspiration, example and encouragement.   They were a model family in which both parents worked hard, helped each other, understood and accepted each other, and took good care of their Child so that Jesus might grow up not only in human knowledge but also as a Child of God.

2) We need to make the family a confessional rather than a courtroom.  A senior Judge of the Supreme Court congratulated the bride and groom in a marriage with a pertinent piece of advice: “See that you never convert your family into a courtroom; instead let it be a confessional. If the husband and wife start arguing like attorneys in an attempt to justify their behavior, their family becomes a court of law and nobody wins.  On the other hand, if the husband and the wife — as in a confessional — are ready to admit their faults and try to correct them, the family becomes a heavenly one.”

3) Marriage is a sacrament of holiness. Each family is called to holiness. By the Sacrament of Matrimony (marriage), Jesus sanctifies not only the spouses but also the entire family. The husband and wife attain holiness when they discharge their duties faithfully, trusting in God, and drawing on the power of God by prayer.

ADVENT 4/A SURPRISES FROM GOD

2Sam. 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16; Mzm. 89:2-3,4-5,27,29; Rm. 16:25-27; Luk. 1:26-38.

Today’s readings focus on the circumstances leading up to the first coming of Jesus, the event that sets the pattern for his coming to us now and at the end of time. The Gospel stresses the key role of Mary in the work of our salvation. In addition, today’s Scripture texts describe God’s promise to David and its fulfillment in Jesus, the Son of David. They also tell us that God’s preparation for the coming of Jesus was full of surprises. (Add an anecdote)

Scripture lessons: The unfolding of God’s plan of salvation through history has contained many surprises. The first reading surprises us by telling of God’s promise to David that he would have a long line of royal descendants culminating in a final King, Jesus Christ. In the Responsorial Psalm (Ps 89), the Psalmist recalls all of God’s promises and surprises us, describing God’s promise to David and his descendants in terms of a Covenant. The second reading surprises us with Paul’s explanation of the unveiling of God’s plan for human salvation through Jesus. In today’s Gospel, the Angel Gabriel surprises Mary with seven announcements. i) Even as a virgin betrothed to Joseph, she will become a mother. ii) She will become a mother through “the Holy Spirit [Who] will come upon you, and the Power of the Most High will overshadow you.” iii) The angel continues, “Therefore, the Child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God.” iv) She is to “name the child Jesus,” which means Savior. v) God will make Him a King and, as a descendant in the line of David, vi) “He will rule over the House of Jacob forever, and of His Kingdom there will be no end.” vii) As a Divine sign, Elizabeth, Mary’s aged barren cousin is six months pregnant, “for,” says Gabriel, “nothing shall be impossible with God!” The Gospel narrative also surprises us by reminding us that God’s promise is best fulfilled not in buildings, or even in great kings like Solomon, but rather in humble souls like Mary who trusted in God’s promise.

Life messages: 1) We need to say a courageous and generous “yes” to God: True obedience comes from a free choice made in the light of what is true and good. Such a self-surrender often requires a great deal of courage because it can involve going against the tide of social expectations. True obedience also aims at putting oneself at the service of something/Someone that is greater than oneself, accepting what God clearly wants us to do or what He wants to do through us. It is by saying, with Jesus and Mary, a wholehearted and totally unconditional “Yes” – “Fiat! May it be done in me,” to Jesus that he will be re-born in each of us, or maybe even born in me for the first time. By my saying “Yes,” Jesus will be born or re-born in others, too. 2) We need to try to learn God’s plan for our lives: The Good News in today’s Scripture message is not only that God is making provision for the salvation of His people, but also that He has a plan for each individual person. In many cases, our work for God seems rather ordinary, but each ordinary task which we carry out fits into God’s plan in ways that we cannot yet understand. God desires not only the skill of our hands and talents but the love of our hearts. The Babe in the Manger reminds us of what God has done and is still doing for us. What are we doing for Him in return? Let us show our gratitude to God by living as true followers of Christ: “Behold, here I am, Lord! I come to do Your will.”

Advent III [B] "Bersukacitalah selalu dalam Tuhan."

Yes. 61:1-2a,10-11; MT Luk. 1:46-48,49-50,53-54; 1Tes. 5:16-24; Yoh. 1:6-8,19-28

Introduction: Hari Minggu Adven ketiga disebut "Minggu  Gaudete"  karena Misa untuk hari ini (dalam teks Latin aslinya), dimulai dengan antifon pembuka: "Gaudete in Domino semper" – "Bersukacitalah selalu dalam Tuhan." Untuk mengingatkan diri kita bahwa kita sedang mempersiapkan diri untuk kesempatan kelahiran Yesus yang sangat menyenangkan, kita menyalakan lilin mawar di karangan bunga Adven, dan imam dapat mengenakan jubah mawar.  Tema umum dari pembacaan Kitab Suci hari itu adalah sukacita dan dorongan. Bacaan-bacaan itu mendorong kita untuk membuat persiapan yang diperlukan dari kita sementara kita menantikan kelahiran kembali Yesus di dalam hati dan kehidupan kita.  Kitab Suci mengingatkan kita bahwa kedatangan Yesus, masa lalu, sekarang, dan masa depan, adalah alasan untuk sukacita kita.

Scripture lessons: Nabi Yesaya, dalam bacaan pertama,  mendorong orang-orang buangan Yahudi yang kembali dari Babel untuk bersukacita karena Tuhan mereka, Yahweh, adalah Pembimbing, Penyedia, dan Pelindung mereka yang kuat.

Dalam Mazmur Tanggapan hari ini (Lukas 1:46 ff.) Maria bersukacita dalam berkat besar yang diberikan kepadanya, berseru: "Jiwaku memuliakan Tuhan; rohku menemukan sukacita di dalam Allah, Juruselamatku."

 Santo Paulus, dalam bacaan kedua,  menasihati umat Kristiani Tesalonika untuk "selalu bersukacita" dengan menjalani kehidupan yang tak bercela, kudus dan penuh syukur yang dibimbing oleh Roh Kudus, karena kedatangan Kristus yang kedua sudah dekat, dan Ia setia dalam janji-Nya untuk memberi upah kepada mereka.

Injil hari ini mengatakan bahwa Yohanes Pembaptis datang untuk memberi kesaksian tentang Jahshua sebagai Terang dunia. Pembaptis ingin semua orang Yahudi bersukacita karena Mesias yang telah lama dinantikan, sebagai terang dunia, akan menghapus kegelapan dosa dari dunia.  Kita bersukacita atas kerendahan hati Yohanes Pembaptis, yang memberi tahu para anggota Sanhedrin yang menantangnya bahwa dia tidak layak bahkan untuk menjadi budak Yesus sang Mesias. Kita juga bersukacita dalam ketulusan dan komitmen Yohanes yang menghabiskan dirinya sepenuhnya dalam mempersiapkan orang-orang untuk Mesias yang telah lama ditunggu-tunggu. Kita memiliki alasan tambahan untuk bersukacita karena, seperti Yohanes Pembaptis, kita, juga, dipilih untuk memberikan kesaksian tentang Kristus Yesus, Terang dunia.

Life message: 1) Kita perlu memberi kesaksian tentang Kristus Sang Terang. Misi kita, sebagai saudara dan saudari Kristus dan anggota Gereja-Nya, adalah untuk memantulkan Terang Kristus kepada orang lain, sama seperti bulan memantulkan terang matahari.   Sangat penting selama masa Adven bahwa kita mencerminkan kasih Kristus yang berbagi dan pengampunan-Nya yang tanpa syarat melalui hidup kita.  Ada terlalu banyak orang yang hidup dalam kegelapan dan kemiskinan, dan yang tidak memiliki kebebasan sejati karena kecanduan jahat dan pilihan buruk mereka.  Ada orang lain yang tuli dan dibutakan oleh atraksi murah dunia.  Banyak orang lain merasa kesepian, tidak diinginkan, ditolak, dan terpinggirkan.  Marilah kita membawa Terang Kristus yang sejati untuk menerangi kehidupan semua saudara dan saudari ini selama masa Adven ini melalui kasih kita yang berbagi, belas kasihan yang melimpah, pengampunan tanpa syarat, dan pelayanan yang rendah hati. Kita akan dapat menyelesaikan misi kesaksian memancarkan Terang Kristus ini hanya dengan bertobat dari dosa-dosa kita, meminta pengampunan Allah setiap hari, dan dengan memperbarui hidup kita melalui doa-doa harian kita, dengan mengunjungi Sakramen Rekonsiliasi, dengan menghadiri dan mengambil bagian dalam perayaan Ekaristi, dengan membaca Alkitab setiap hari secara meditatif dan penuh doa,  dan dengan melakukan karya-karya kerahiman jasmani dan rohani. KEDATANGAN KEMBALI- ADVEN II/A

Yes. 40:1-5,9-11; Mzm. 85:9ab-10,11-12,13-14; 2Ptr. 3:8-14; Mrk. 1:1-8.

Kedatangan kembali merupakan tema sentral pembacaan Kitab Suci pada Minggu Adven II. Ketiga bacaan tersebut berfokus pada kebutuhan mutlak untuk bersiap menyambut “Kedatangan kembali” Kristus ke dalam hati dan hidup kita melalui pertobatan sejati, silih, doa, dan pembaruan hidup kita. Hal ini juga mengingatkan kita akan kedatangan Yesus di masa lalu, sekitar 2000 tahun yang lalu, dan kedatangan Yesus setiap hari ke dalam kehidupan kita saat ini melalui perayaan Ekaristi, melalui Kitab Suci, dan komunitas doa. Kedatangan-Nya di masa depan (Kedatangan Kedua) adalah penggenapan rencana penyelamatan Allah bagi kita semua, sejak kekekalan.

Bacaan pertama, yang diambil dari nabi Yesaya, menceritakan kepada kita tentang orang-orang buangan di Babilonia yang pulang ke negara asal mereka, Yehuda, dan kota suci mereka, Yerusalem. Yesaya meyakinkan umatnya bahwa Tuhan akan memimpin mereka dalam prosesi akbar menuju tanah air dan merawat mereka seperti seorang gembala merawat dombanya. Mazmur Tanggapan (Mzm 85) menggambarkan bagaimana shalom atau kedamaian sempurna datang seiring dengan kedatangan Tuhan. Bacaan kedua yang diambil dari surat kedua Santo Petrus ini mengajak kita untuk bersiap-siap pulang ke Surga bersama Yesus pada KedatanganNya yang Kedua kali. Petrus mengatakan kepada mereka yang meragukan Kedatangan Kedua Yesus bahwa cara Allah menghitung waktu berbeda dengan cara kita dan bahwa Allah mempunyai alasan-alasan-Nya untuk menunda Kedatangan Kristus yang Kedua. Injil memberitahu kita melalui Yohanes Pembaptis bagaimana kita harus mempersiapkan diri untuk menerima “kedatangan kembali” Yesus Juruselamat kita ke dalam hidup kita selama masa Adven melalui pertobatan dan pembaruan hidup. Yohanes berkhotbah bahwa perilaku yang pantas bagi mereka yang mempersiapkan “jalan Tuhan” adalah dengan dibaptis “saat mereka mengaku dosanya.” Dia ingin orang-orang Yahudi mempersiapkan hidup mereka bagi Mesias dengan mengisi lembah-lembah prasangka, meratakan gunung-gunung kesombongan, dan meluruskan jalan-jalan mereka yang tidak adil dan tidak bermoral. Yohanes merekomendasikan baptisan pertobatan di sungai Yordan kepada orang-orang Yahudi yang akrab dengan ritual dan pencucian simbolis. Hal yang paling menakjubkan tentang baptisan Yohanes adalah, sebagai seorang Yahudi, ia meminta sesama orang Yahudi untuk menerima baptisan pertobatan yang hanya wajib dijalani oleh orang bukan Yahudi.

 1) Kita perlu mempersiapkan kelahiran kembali Yesus: Kita diundang oleh Gereja untuk mempersiapkan Natal dengan bertobat dari dosa-dosa kita dan memperbarui hidup kita sehingga Yesus dapat dilahirkan kembali di dalam kita. Mari kita mengingat mistik Jerman Angelus Silesius “Kristus bisa saja dilahirkan ribuan kali di Betlehem – tetapi semuanya sia-sia sampai Dia lahir di dalam diriku.”( https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Angelus_Silesius). 2) Kita perlu mengizinkan Yesus dilahirkan kembali dalam hidup kita. Orang-orang di sekitar kita harus mengenali kelahiran kembali Yesus dalam hidup kita melalui kasih kita yang berbagi, pengampunan tanpa syarat, hati yang penuh belas kasih dan belas kasihan, serta semangat pelayanan yang rendah hati dan berkomitmen. 3) Marilah kita menerima tantangan Yohanes Pembaptis untuk mengubah masa Adven ini menjadi “kedatangan kembali” rohani yang nyata dengan membuat persiapan yang diperlukan untuk kedatangan Tuhan dan Juruselamat kita Yesus ke dalam hati dan kehidupan kita.

SUNDAY ADVENT 1st - B CHRIST SECOND COMING

  Yes. 63:16b-17; 64:1,3b-8; Mzm. 80:2ac,3b,15-16,18-19; 1Kor. 1:3-9; Mrk. 13:33-37.

The central theme of today’s readings is Jesus’ warning to us to be alert, watchful, and prepared because Christ’s Second Coming, coinciding with the end of the world, can occur at any time. People, in general, have a paranoid fear about the end of the world. It was expected in AD 204, 999, and 2000. The title of a best-seller published in 1988 was 101 Reasons Why Christ Returns in 1988. An extremely popular film released in 1999 about Christ’s Second Coming was Omega Code and another film released in 2005 was Left Behind. 

Excessive fear of the tribulations accompanying the end of the world led the followers of a religious cult led by Jim Jones (in 1978), and followers of another cult called Heaven’s Gate (in 1997), to commit mass suicide.

 

But Jesus, in today’s Gospel, gives us the assurance that we need not be afraid of the end of the world, Christ’s Second Coming, and the Last Judgment, if we remain alert and prepared. The Church invites us on this first Sunday of Advent to prepare for Christ’s Second Coming,

 

1) by properly celebrating during this Christmas season the fond memory of Christ’s first coming 2000 years ago,

2) by experiencing Christ’s daily advent or coming in every Eucharistic celebration, in the Holy Bible, and in the worshipping community,

and 3) by preparing daily for Jesus’ Second Coming which, for us, will happen at the unknown moment of our death or the equally unknown moment when the World will end.

 

In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah prays for God’s active presence so that the Jewish community, returned from Babylonian exile, may remain faithful to their God.

In the second reading, St. Paul prays for the reconversion of Christians in Corinth who have misused their gifts and charisms and remain ill-prepared for Christ’s Second Coming.

 

In today’s Gospel, using the short parable of the servants and gatekeeper of an absentee master who could return at any time, Jesus instructs his followers to be alert and watchful while doing their Christian duties with sincerity. The gatekeeper and the household servants are expected to be ever vigilant because their master is sure to return. Although the time of his return is uncertain, the reward or punishment is sure.

 

1) Live in the living presence of Jess every day. The message of today’s Scripture is that we should live in the living presence of Jesus every day waiting for his Second Coming. We can experience Christ’s living presence in the Holy Eucharist, in the Holy Bible, in the worshiping community of our parish, in our family, in our souls, and in everyone around us. The early Christians experienced the living presence and coming of Jesus with absolute certainty. So their mutual greeting was not “Hi!” or “Good Morning!” but the Aramaic, “Maran Atha” which means “Come, Lord Jesus.” This greeting acknowledged Jesus present in each of them and about to return. May God bless you, and keep you ever prepared for Christ’s second coming.
